Steel Profile had spent over four decades earning its place as one of Australia’s most respected architectural editorial titles. We reimagined that legacy for a digital-first world, designing and building a platform that transformed the magazine from a static reading experience into an active research tool for architects, builders and designers. The result was a digital ecosystem designed not just for content consumption, but for discovery, saving, reference and long-term professional use.

The challenge was moving Steel Profile beyond the limitations of a traditional digital magazine without losing the editorial credibility it had built over 40 years in print.

We approached the platform as a research environment rather than a publishing archive, designing a system where architects could save projects, build moodboards, explore by typology and personalise their content experience. The result was a digital brand platform that felt as considered, structured and architectural as the buildings it exists to celebrate.

Personalisation and content-saving functionality gave Steel Profile a level of utility rarely seen in editorial publishing. Architects could build moodboards, save projects by typology, curate visual references and create their own research pathways over time, turning passive reading into an active professional tool. This shift transformed Steel Profile from a publication people browse once into a digital resource designed to become part of the architectural workflow itself.

Steel Profile was built as a responsive editorial platform that works as naturally on mobile and tablet as it does on desktop, allowing architects, designers and builders to research, save and explore content across every environment. From personalised moodboards and project archives to full-edition browsing and content discovery, the platform transformed editorial content into a flexible digital experience designed for real professional workflows rather than passive reading.

Steel Profile’s digital experience was built around how architects actually engage with content: visually, contextually and with the intention to return. Project pages were designed to lead with architectural photography, layered with supporting material details, credits and editorial insights in a structure that feels intuitive, calm and deeply usable. The platform balanced editorial elegance with research functionality, creating a digital environment that supports inspiration and practical decision-making at the same time.

Beyond individual articles and editions, the broader system created a connected archive where projects, categories, architects and saved content all work together as part of a larger research ecosystem. The result was a digital platform that transformed decades of editorial content into something more valuable than a magazine: a structured architectural resource built to stay open, searchable and genuinely useful throughout the design process.

Steel Profile’s digital experience was built to carry both the archive and the future of the publication in one connected environment. Historic editions, current issues and project-led editorial content were structured into a system that made discovery intuitive, visual and deeply usable, giving architects immediate access to decades of architectural thinking without losing the formal editorial quality that made the publication valuable in print.

Every interface was built to balance editorial beauty with practical utility. Rich architectural imagery, clean navigation and structured project information worked together to create a platform that felt as considered as the buildings it featured, turning Steel Profile from a publication people read into a digital resource professionals actively returned to.

The Steel Profile digital platform transformed a respected print publication into a living architectural research tool built for contemporary professional behaviour. Rather than simply digitising editorial content, the project redefined how architects, builders and engineers could discover, save and return to architectural knowledge through a structured, scalable digital experience.

By combining editorial storytelling with research-led UX, the platform shifted Steel Profile from passive reading to active professional utility. Personalised content pathways, project archives and moodboard functionality created a system designed for repeat use, extending the publication’s value beyond issue-based reading into an ongoing reference tool for the architecture and construction community.
